My tween daughter appeared at my office door as I was working on a presentation and asked what I was doing. I launched into a wordy but primitive explanation: “I’m creating a presentation. It’s a speech with a slide show but it’s on the computer and….” She listened patiently then nonchalantly replied, “You mean a Power Point?”
I laughed out loud at my own ignorance. Just because Power Point was new to me did not mean it was new to her. For relative neophytes like me, keeping up with technology is like trying to catch a speeding train. I often wake up feeling like a newborn – so many things to learn!
The moral of the story: if you want to feel smarter than your tween, steer clear of technology-related conversation. They were born with it. You weren’t. It might actually be a code in their DNA.
