Jobs Build Self-Esteem in Tweens

Humans need a sense of purpose.  We want to feel that we belong and add value.  Meaningful work gives one a feeling of accomplishment and achievement.  A job well done is satisfying at worst; and more often, it is fulfilling.

Don’t let a tween’s reluctance to complete chores fool you.  Tweens, too, are motivated by sense of purpose.  Though far from legal working age, tweens have valuable employee potential.  They’re energetic, creative, and eager – with the right motivation.

Consider hiring a tween for jobs you avoid or can’t find time to complete such as:

  • organizing photos into an album or scrapbook
  • transferring  personal VHS tapes to disc
  • stacking wood
  • pet sitting

Tweens also enjoy working alongside an adult or in groups.  Consider:

  • mother’s helper
  • cooking a meal
  • assembling anything

For each child, the pay may differ.  Some are motivated by money; others by the promise of a special outing with friends or family.

The benefits of work to a tween?

  • Boosts her sense of self-worth – feelings of value
  • Stimulates her mind, body and senses
  • Makes constructive use of free time
  • Teaches a new skill

Summer is coming to an end.  Tweens may be running out of new and exciting activities to keep them occupied.  Next time you hear the words, “I’m bored,” be ready with a job.  And be ready to be impressed!
