Do you have a parenting mission statement?

Every organization should have a mission statement; a family is an organization.  A mission statement is simply a statement of intention identifying an organization’s committment and values.   It can act as more than just a foundation on which to build a practice.  If used correctly, a mission statement is reviewed and renewed if necessary.  Sort of like a renewal of vows in marriage.

I suspect that most parents do have a core set of values and promises they live by, even if they’ve never written them down.  As parents we tend to coast on our unarticulated philosophies and intentions.  And we wrongly assume that our partner and progeny are in tune with us – when we often are not in tune with ourselves!  What better way to refresh your purpose as a parent than to write out your intentions?  ‘Get it in writing,’ they say – if not to make it official, than at least to give it credibility.
